Welcome to the 53rd monthly issue of My Mac Magazine! This is a great issue all around, but one item we feel makes it just a little more special. In this issue, we have an interview with the man who started the Macintosh project at Apple" Jef Raskin! Jef was kind enough to do an interview with us here at My Mac, and I want to thank him very much for his time.
For those unfamiliar with Jef Raskin, I would point you to the stellar book by Owen W. Linzmayer "Apple Confidential” In it, Owen writes "In 1994, while Apple and all the major Macintosh publications were celebrating the Mac's 10th anniversary, one man quietly celebrating its 15th. That man is Jef Raskin, the true father of the Macintosh."
True enough, Jef Raskin (employee #31 at Apple) was given the green light to elaborate on his idea for a "computer for the person on the street" by then Apple chairman Mike Markkula in 1979. Originally, Jef wanted a computer which would cost around $500, a feat which to this day has yet to be met. (Unless you count those really striped down cheap PC's, which you can find under the $500 price tag, but remember you get what you pay for)
Many people to this day still think of the Macintosh as "Steve Job's baby" which is both true and not. Sure, Job's brought the Mac into the spot-light, but it was Raskin who started the project, only to see Steve Jobs steal it away from him. And who knows, perhaps this was for the best? No one will ever know, but all the Mac faithful should know the truth: Jef Raskin created the Macintosh. (Even though Jef originally wanted to call it the Apple V)
Now you know who Jef Raskin is: the man responsible for your Macintosh ever being in the first place.
